I find this song particularly entertaining as it so aptly depicts the narcissist as he/she runs away from real life to go on to the promise of a “better” life. If they’re (temporarily) lucky enough, they might be able to attach themselves to a person with money. If they have their own (and God forbid! your) money … they won’t be able to resist gloating over the fact that now they have a lot more of it to flaunt … you know … being free of all of that cumbersome baggage that goes with having a boring spouse, children, family, etc.
But as we all know, Father Time is one formidable adversary. Even the most calculated of the self-absorbed eventually have to cry uncle and concede to His power. So, okay, for right now, it appears that your ex has all the trappings of nirvana, while you appear to be left to your (deserved) destiny of sackcloth and ashes, barely scraping by. Your ex and his/her new squeeze won’t even try to hide their smugness as they look down so condescendingly on you from their flowery bed of ease. But take heart.
Never forget that your runaway Humpty Dumpty’s life can come crashing down with the feather-light push of just one tragic mishap, and often in one day. And once shattered, even he/she will be relegated to being yesterday’s news, something that is anathema to their False Selves and bloated egos.
The difference between the two stories is that in your case, by the time Karma Bus makes it’s way around to your Dear Departed Sweet Cheeks, you will have had time to evolve in someone much better, with new and improved self respect on board.
In contrast, he/she will not have redeemed any of the time. (Why ever should they work on themselves when they are perfect and already have it all?!) Having built their mansion so deep in the woods of Fantasy Land and Denial, when the cardboard set of their pathetic stage play collapses around them, they’ll be so far from Home (reality) that they won’t be able to find their way out with GPS and a 1200-lumen tactical flashlight. Generally, aging Narcissists end up melting down when they finally see that no one is left who views them as Prince or Princess Charming.
It’s just a matter of time.
